Stimpson Avenue Academy gets gold with School Games accolade

Stimpson Avenue Academy has received a glowing endorsement for its commitment to sport and PE with a School Games gold mark award.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Stimpson Avenue Academy received the gold award in recognition of its strong PE curriculum and wider sporting activities available to pupils in clubs and at competitions. For example, a total of 20 different clubs have been delivered over the course of the year, covering a range of sports such as Archery, Golf, Badminton, Dodgeball, Gymnastics, Football, Hockey, and Netball.

The school is part of East Midlands Academy Trust and pupils were this summer able to take part in the Trust’s Olympic Day events, which included a torch relay, a sports day specifically for pupils with additional needs called the Ability Games and the EMAT Olympic Day, a huge inter-school athletics competition attended by Olympic javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson CBE.

PE lead Chris Osborne said: “At Stimpson Avenue Academy, we are passionate about ensuring our pupils have the opportunity to access and participate in a wide range of sporting opportunities. At all levels, our staff go above and beyond in making this happen. It has been a real team effort.”

Head of school Luci Clapton said: “Sport is fantastic for physical health but also for mental wellbeing, teamwork, discipline and, of course, having fun.

“I’m delighted that we have achieved this prestigious gold award and I hope it will inspire our pupils to remain active and aim high. Who knows, we may even have a future Olympic gold medallist among them!”
