Pupils in the Caterpillar Pod at Castle Academy have been eagerly looking forward to using their new outdoor play area, which has now officially opened for them to enjoy.
The newly transformed space includes a climbing frame, a bike and scooter track with parking bays, mark-making and sound stations, and a soft wet-pour floor to help prevent bumps and scrapes.
The new area has been designed to support children’s physical, social, and emotional development. It provides opportunities for children to develop their balance, coordination, communication, and teamwork skills in a fun and inclusive environment.
The Caterpillar Pod is a specialist provision for EYFS and KS1 children aged 4–7 who have an EHCP for communication and interaction needs, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The new play area will enhance their opportunities to learn through play in a space tailored to their needs, supporting their individual learning pathways and development.
Staff have already seen the positive impact of the new area, with pupils showing confidence and curiosity as they explore the equipment and enjoy spending time outdoors together.
Ruth Brennan, Head of School at Castle Academy, said:
“It has been wonderful to see the children’s excitement as they explore the new play area. This space will make such a difference to their learning and development, helping them to grow in confidence and enjoy their time outside.”
Castle Academy is part of East Midlands Academy Trust.
